Is Technology Controlling You?

October 2nd, 2009

In the not too distant future, machines will be much smarter than humans. According to inventor and futurist scientist Ray Kurzweil, this will happen by 2045.

Machines are already smarter than us in many ways. They do math and trivia much better than us. The chess champion Garry Kasparov was beaten by Deep Blue. Machines spell, fix grammar, drive trains, translate, draw, calculate, sew, create art and fly much better than humans. Machines are learning very quickly to distinguish (fingerprints, irises) and relate (robots, computerized voices).

How long can we stay ahead of them? We're doing everything we can to help them overtake us!

But anyway, we're in charge, right? Like when you really want to relax and unwind, you can always turn off your Blackberry, right? And you don't suffer withdrawal when your internet connection goes down. And you've never experienced joint soreness from overuse of an electronic device, right?

You can stay alive without technology, can't you? Hmmm.

We are in charge, but just barely.

How many basic brain functions are we losing? Long division went out with my generation. Communicating face-to-face is disappearing with the current one. What are we going to use that extra brain space for?

Are there any ultimate human abilities that will keep us safe from our own inventions? Our experiences with the rapid development of technology in our lifetimes should give us some clues. There are only two crucial abilities that I can pinpoint:
1) discipline …which is only useful when you are holding to
2) purpose.

Will machines ever become so smart that they will be able to figure out why we are here?

Who or What Controls Your Health? -a story

July 11th, 2009

I recently learnt something very valuable about my health and I want to share it so that others can benefit. Although I learned it through a specific health issue, what I learned applies to many other types of health problems.

I had been having problems with heart palpitations for over a year. I had been to the doctor and had reams of tests. I was told that it was 'nothing to worry about', it was not dangerous. And, of course, there was nothing they could do to help me. Even if I wasn't worrying that I would die, it was still very distracting and uncomfortable. I couldn't ignore the fact that my heart would beat unreasonably hard while I was trying to go to sleep and it would often beat unevenly leaving my feeling quite uncomfortable, weak and distracted.

Since the medical profession seemed unable to help me, I tried to help myself. The heart palpitations would come and go at different times so I investigated for myself what could be causing them. I kept records to try to find some correspondence between the symptoms and my diet, environment and emotional state. It was very difficult to find any pattern, but eventually I started to notice major changes related to the water I was drinking.

I bought myself a water filter and the symptoms improved somewhat. But I found that the symptoms were even less when I was drinking bottled water. I really hate to drink bottled water because I know it is so bad for the environment. I've seen the stinking delivery trucks that bring the bottled water to my neighbourhood, so even apart from the environmental expenses of production and packaging, I know that drinking bottled water is a damaging thing to do. But I did want to have a healthy beating heart.

Despite my evidence, my husband was not convinced that anything in the water could be causing my heart palpitations. He said that compared to all the different chemicals we take in with our food and air, the water is very clean and could not cause such a problem.

Rather than argue, we agreed to set up an experiment. We filled identical bottles with store bought and filtered water and he agreed to switch them at some point so that I would not know what kind of water I was drinking. After a couple of weeks, I noticed something different one day and I was pretty sure he had changed the water. Sure enough, that evening my heart started to beat fiercely like it had not done in weeks since I'd been drinking the bottled water. It continued like that for a few days before I finally mentioned it to my husband. I said, “I know you changed the water on Friday. My heart has been acting up ever since then.” He said, “No, I never changed the water. You're still drinking bottled water.”

That statement shocked me for a minute and then I realized something very, very useful.

Somehow I had been creating those irregular heart beats myself all along. I was in fact completely in control, although I couldn't explain how or why I would do that!

Since that day I've realized my personal responsibility for my health and my heart is cooperating. I still occasionally have heart palpitations but it is much rarer and less severe. When it happens I notice and take responsibility. I know it must be ME who's doing that, and I'm in control.

I am really enjoying this series and would love
to discuss it with you someday. Although it is esoteric, the essence of the
discussion is very important to the future of humankind. Even if you don't think
you are spiritual, you still are! ;)

Embarrass Yourself for the Environment

March 6th, 2009

I had a wake up call last week (The Awaken the Dreamer, Changing the Dream Symposium) that made me realize that one of the biggest things stopping many of us (myself included) from doing more to protect the environment is embarrassment. Isn't that pathetic? We let a mere transient, harmless emotion stop us from protecting the very thing that keeps us alive and brings us literally everything we have. But it's true. Let me give you one example.

I often buy take-out meals to save time cooking and shopping, and so that I can enjoy the food in my own home. That means that every week I toss out dozens of plastic and styrofoam containers. I know that these used containers are transported in stinking garbage trucks, polluting the air, on the way to fill up a valley in the New Territories that I can no longer hike in. That is how direct the connection is between my consumption and the reduction in the quality of my own life.

The  most convenient away for me to completely eliminate this particular desecration of the environment would be to bring my own containers to the take-out counters that I could easily re-use.

So what is the main reason I don't? It would be embarrassing to stand out and be different.

When I take an inventory of all the other small steps I could take to reduce my environmental impact, I notice that embarrassment is often stopping me.

  • I could complain about the excessive packaging in local supermarket.
  • I could walk to a meeting and arrive a little sweaty rather than taking a taxi.
  • I could carry my own refillable cup.
  • I could bear being called an activist, anti-business or unpatriotic, and speak up against the government's ignorance of the future being created by excessive development.

Isn't it nice now to be able to receive a nod and maybe even a smile when you bring your own bag to the supermarket? Millions of bags will be saved as a result and hopefully that will mean a few less filthy plastic membranes floating along our beaches.

If we wait until protecting the environment is no longer embarrassing, we are squandering our wealth. We will have poorer quality food, more diseases caused by pollution and less natural beauty to bring us joy. If you think about it, you will notice that the pace of these destructive trends is already increasing in our lifetimes.

If you are reading this article, you already know the cost of our/your destructive ways and you know of many changes you could make to reduce your impact. What is your excuse for not doing more?
