Key #4:  Declare
what you want. And feel it.

want by writing it down. Be as specific as you can.

In my ideal

Thinking about what I want from my work gives me a sense of calmness in that I feel I am doing something about my situation just by thinking about it.
My vision of what I want
I live in a peaceful place away from the hectic city life of Hong Kong and do some of my work from home but travel into the city a few times a week for meetings/client meetings etc.
I work with inspiring like minded people who also want their work to be satisfying. I am appreciated and respected and get real enjoyment from what I do. I look forward to new projects because they are challenging enough to keep me on my toes, to allow me to continually learn new skills, but not so overwhelming that I feel I can never succeed.
I also have a lot of variety and meet different people all the time. I don't have a set schedule each day or even each week, but set my own schedule according to my needs that week.
Writing this makes me realize that I am not suited to working 9-5 in an office job and that taking this type of work on is only going to frustrate and probably bore me.
My thought now is 'how can I get what I want'?

I do think commiting to a personal goal and confirming that in some way–like writing it down for yourself–makes sense.
I have trained myself to change a negative mental attitude by using commitment to a goal. When I am running on the treadmill at the gym I tell myself, “You can do 10 more minutes…” or whatever my goal is and repeat to myself over and over, “You can do it”–especially if I start to feel tired.
I visualize finishing and imagine how good the emdorphins and the feeling of accomplishment will feel when I finish. And after doing that for about eight years at the gym, I now do it whenever I face a challenge that feels a bit overwhelming.

In my ideal next position, I work for a nice boss, be stable in income, perhaps manage just one or two persons and these subordinates are easy to manage, I earn enough $$$ to move to a better flat, have more savings. The most important thing is, my working environment is peaceful and pleasant (i.e. not severe competitions) while interacting with many people.

I really like your tip about imagining the good feelings you will have at the gym, and then how you apply this to any challenge in your life. Neat. Thanks.

That's true – getting bogged down by focusing on what's wrong with where you are right now is not only time consuming, it's also mentally and emotionally draining. I like the old adage 'if you think you can or if you think you can't, you're probaly right'. So I might as well think I can and perhaps by thinking positive, I take steps towards making what I want happen.
In my next position, I'd like to live near conservation land away from the bustle of the city, in a position that allows me to use the management skills I've built up over the years, and in a company who delivers high quality products and services that meet customer requirements and also contributes in some fashion to the community in which it's offices are located. I'd like to establish programmes in the company where change from employee lunches can be collected and at the end of month, used to purchase bicycles or school books for children in third world countries. .. or something like that.
What's preventing me from doing that now? Nothing … so I should get started, huh?

    One step at a time!
By coincidence, this week I heard of an organization that helps company's set up programs to benefit charities. See http://www.buy1-give1free.com. What a nice thing to do.

Your description sounds so light and positive. It's great!
Is some of this in your life already? Are there already some people who you enjoy working with? When you start with gratitude and positive energy, it's easier to make changes.
    Thanks for all your posts!
    Cheers,
    Angela

This is a good start …very clear. You could also add details about what you will be like when this happens–your skills and attitudes. This way you'll know what person you need to become to make this vision happen.

I live in Hong Kong but travel regularly for both work and pleasure.
I work from home or a small boutiquey office in town, the flexibility of either is down to me and also dependent on the business I am running and how big it has grown
The business is small to start with and I grow it organically wherever required. The business is true to my passion and strengths and allowing me to be creative and also interact with clients on a regular basis.
My staff are like minded, passionate, fun and engaging and we work together well on a team basis
I am challenged in my role as an entreprenur but this is positive in propelling me forward

    - The work environment is friendly, pleasant and positive.
    - My colleagues and I share the same goal. We can share workload and have a strong team spirit. We have chats and drinks after office hours.
    - My boss is a mature, thoughtful, caring person who see things from a macroscopic view but is also careful with details. My boss has good management skill as well.
    - I earn a decent amount of income allowing me to be able to save a certain amount of money and travel.
    - I have 10 or more days for annual leave.
    - 5-day work.
    - The colleagues and I are efficient and not much over-time work is needed.
    - I enjoy going to work everyday, feeling excited and happy in the day time and having a sense of success at the end of a day.
    - The physical work environment is cosy, allows privacy or has room for staff to take a break. The office looks professional and neat.
    - I can focus on just one or two job tasks.

One more thing, learning and career development is sustainable.

What I want at this moment is to be active then a part of the society by working every day but if I look more deeply, I will say the present is my main problem, how to improve my level and learning more in HK ??
But fare more important to me is the close future (2 or 3 years) because it will make all current decisions right or wrong (even if I know I will be able to switch to another if I did wrong choice). That why, my current objective must be in relation with my career goal !
That why I am stuck at this moment, I guess my decision today will influence the future. The present`s strategy, it isn`t very clear, I have some difficulties to find my way up, I don`t know the HK market and what is match with my profile and goal !
Which position to apply for ?
Which industry or sector to prospect ??
Which Strategy to get a job here ??
Start my own business or to study ?
My best and business interest is to work as operations manager, where I must manage workforce and lead offices and business issues. I have already worked in waste management and food transportation for many years but at a lower positions than I expect today !
Since I moved to china 5 years ago, I have learned and developed new skills which must match with my next objective and goal !
I want to be Office Manager first and afterward Regional Manager (GM) second. The best industry; environment (waste management) first option or transportation (second option) !
    Chris

Sounds like you're fairly clear about what you want, but you're not sure how to get it, right? Do you need a clearer job search strategy? We do offer help for that: http://www.loving-your-work.com/career-adviceCV.htm

    Key #4: Declare
what you want. And feel it.
I work with passion oozing out of every pore . . . I am time rich and feel great. I fix my own schedule and prioritise my diary according to my financial needs. I live with my partner and we enjoy life . . . my kids visit and we all share our life’s anecdotes . . . I am not hugely rich but I am secure and comfortable in my body and mind and dwell not on negativity!!! I travel globally and speak with passion and wisdom . . . I am in demand . . . .
My job is me! What my clients see is me . .. true, honest, real and infectious. People feel great around me and I know it!!!
I offer me . . . my life’s experiences . . . for I am wise and wonderful and others learn from me. They hang on every word . . . and they also pay to listen . . . lots!!!
I am charming and talented . . . it comes from within . . . it is real and I feel real!!!

  18. Angela Spaxman says:

    Love it!
How about amending slightly to take out ‘I am not hugely rich’ and replace with ‘I am hugely rich’. When the rest of what you’ve written is true, you will be hugely rich, regardless of the numbers in your bank account, but because of what you experience in life.

  19. Gareth says:

    . . . I love it too! I found it extremely uplifting to write . . . a real connection . . . from inside me! Take your point too . . . rich in life/passion . . . for money cannot buy real happiness . . .

  20. Gareth, another thing I was thinking about on reading your post is that a lot of it is already true in some aspects of your life. The more you put your attention on what is already in line with your vision, the more energy you will gain and the more momentum to let your vision spread throughout your life. That is the power of gratitude. You get what you focus on.
